Our loved friend, and faithful Africa Jam volunteer, Thembi Ngubane, recently died from drug-resistant Tuberculosis. When most people were silent about their HIV status, Thembi was brave and open about being HIV-positive and helped Africa Jam's school outreach program spread awareness of HIV to thousands of high school students by sharing her story. She helped us all put a face to the mind numbing statistics.
In 2007, Thembi's Aid's Diary aired on NPR, you can listen to it here.
While with Africa Jam, she often told students:
"I wish Africa Jam had come to my school when I was a student, because maybe I would have listened and would not be HIV-positive today. Please listen, there are too many of our people dying. You can do something to stop this disease."
Africa Jam staff and volunteers learned a lot from Thembi and will continue to be warriors in the struggle against HIV/Aids and Tuberculosis.
